My favorite project at Circuitboard Computers?
I was asked recently what my favorite project was while working at Circuitboard Computers and Technology, Inc. (CBCT). My first reaction was there are eight years’ worth of projects and that’s a lot to choose from! But the special project that had the most impact on me is FileCab.
Marcus Ray, CEO at CBCT, wanted a cloud-based system that would cut down on the time spent searching for documents. He said it took him hours to locate a document from a year ago inside one of his messy filing cabinets. On several occasions, Marcus was away from the office and needed a file. Unable to just pull the file out of the air, he would have to call the office to get the information—which was hit-or-miss at best. Marcus searched for an application or software to suit his needs but he never found an affordable solution for his small business. So being the owner of a small business tech company, Marcus decided to commission a custom solution that he could also sell as a service to other small businesses at an affordable price.
I started developing FileCab in 2008 from the ground up as a secure cloud-based digital file cabinet system. I used HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL to build the application. I then hosted FileCab on a Kubuntu-based Apache web server housed at CBCT. For the next eight years, I continued to improve the system and develop new features. Some features included setting advanced permissions for users and user groups, restricting access to sensitive files and folders, and inputting other flexible administrator options. FileCab is secure and HIPAA compliant.
Marcus is ecstatic over how user-friendly FileCab is. Marcus claims that the application cuts down over 90% of his time spent on searching for old files. It is now easy to pull up any saved document on any device, such as Marcus’ phone when he is out of the office. FileCab also frees significant office space after Marcus removed all his cumbersome filing cabinets. Marcus is very happy with his custom solution!
