It has been about four months since my first day of work at San Diego State University. I can still remember scaling the hill to get to the library from the parking structure. I was not sure if I would make it! The last campus I worked at was built over a swamp so the land was flat and the use of stairs was rare. SDSU is built on and around a mesa so the campus itself has different levels, which means there are stairs outside of buildings just to get around the exterior campus.

I was very anxious to meet everyone in my department and to get to know more about everyone on my team and whom I will be working with closely. I was also eager to figure out how to traverse campus, where everything was in the library, and what my department and office would be like. My mind fluttered with a million questions and curiosities! It was sensory overload the first day to say the least.

Today, I am breezing through this amorphous campus and I am settling into my new role as part of the Library team well. I am loving it! The team that I work with is awesome at what they do. Everyone is warm towards one another and they are passionate toward their individual projects. The staff I work with is very knowledgeable about the tech systems they service and the daily operations they employ. They are also very helpful when I have questions.

As a C-type personality, the library team enthuses and challenges me in the best ways. There is always engaging conversation— exciting talk about the latest in tech, amusing debate over which new San Diego microbrewery is a must visit, gratifying personal asides that enlighten me with new perspectives, and of course a lot of proactive dialogue regarding needed solutions for one of many on-going projects.

I love my new job! The campus itself has also gotten me to invest in a more active lifestyle, which is great since tech work is often stationary. The warmth and gusto emanating from my coworkers has me looking forward to coming to work each day. I am excited to grow as a professional with SDSU and I am thankful to be a part of such an awesome team! Go Aztecs!
